Went to the Point twice today. Walked over the frozen lake. Glorious, like exploring the arctic… or an endless alien desert. Only two mishaps occurred: first my leg fell through the ice. Then my body, up to the waist, by the shore. The surface of the lake was punctured by so many dips, probably made by others who had stumbled across similar weaknesses in the terrain.
nast (Cyrillic “наст”): The thin crust of ice over snow
The coolest thing, I think, second to the bulges of ice formed of interrupted waves, was that if you looked far enough into the distance, the middle, unfrozen part of the lake was visible, like a giant blue footprint.
