Well, this blog went out with a whimper rather than a bang, but now I have new one to add to my ever-growing retinue.

Billy Joel Cancels His Memoir →
“Mr. Joel told The Associated Press in a statement that writing the book made him realize that he was ‘not all that interested in talking about the past.’”
I don’t give two hoots about Billy Joel (except that I used his song as a study guide for my US History AP exam) but he is either incredibly stupid for throwing away an opportunity to be published, or the most...

snow day 2
Went to the Point twice today. Walked over the frozen lake. Glorious, like exploring the arctic… or an endless alien desert. Only two mishaps occurred: first my leg fell through the ice. Then my body, up to the waist, by the shore. The surface of the lake was punctured by so many dips, probably made by others who had stumbled across similar weaknesses in the terrain.

wintry mix
The atmosphere imbued with persistent but small flurries for most of the afternoon, I was on my way to Z&H after an annoyingly long day when I looked down at my phone to send a text message and— behold!— when I raised my eyes the snow had somehow been amplified to those slow and large dandruff-like flakes that impair vision past five feet of distance. All in the space of two...
It's 2011!
It appears that I now live about two or three days behind nominal time.

Today's bizarre discovery, courtesy Wikipedia
The actor from Glee who plays Artie (the boy in the wheelchair) grew up in Plano and was a member of the (now defunct) local boy band NLT (“Not Like Them”).
I remember that band! They were starting to get big when I was in high school (operative word “starting” and not “big”), emerging from homegrown status and signing with record labels, etc. I find the...
Dreams
It’s probably because I watched Hot Fuzz last weekend. The entire town was at war. Everything— dusty ground, buildings, air— was brown, like it was the Wild West. I didn’t know anyone but there were people, there were a lot of people, and they were shooting at me. One woman charged in front of me so I grabbed her by the throat before she could shoot and she turned into a...

I will tell you what he told me
in the years just after the war

the second world war
don’t lose your arrogance yet he said
you can do that when you’re older
lose it too soon and you may
merely replace it with vanity
just one time he suggested
changing the usual order

why point out a thing twice

“If I could be any kind of great artist,” I say, “I would be a musician. To write poetry— then to raise its emotional power through music— what higher form of art exists?”
He thinks for a moment, then replies, “That may be true, my aspiring writer. But a good song or a good movie fades with time— a good book lives much longer in your...

“Ten Reasons We’re Not Going to Grad School”
Need not end. Indeed, nothing. Step out. Grist for wits. Shadow of your shell. Stand there. No other ground. No other. And the world concerns you every- where, but do not identify with it. Let light onto us. Flowers through the gate, flowers skimming the wall. A carpet of petal. Treasures below the earth. Neither in this world nor another, guarding. Nothing but fade and flourish.

Love After Love
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by...

I’m such a flake. After spending more time than I want to admit wrestling with this stupid thing, I’ve decided to use Tumblr for recording my summer after all.
Probably easier for everyone all around this way, anyway.
